Methyl alcohol is a light, volatile, colourless, flammable liquid with distinctive similar to that of ethanol. At room temperature, it is a polar liquid. It is mainly produced industrially by hydrogenation of carbon monoxide.

Applications:
In the manufacture of formaldehyde, acetic acid, methyl tert-butyl ether(MTBE). As a gasoline additive. As an antifreeze for automotive radiators.
In the manufacture of methylamines, methyl halides, methyl esters.
As an industrial solvent for inks, adhesives, dyes and resins. Also used as a solvent in the manufacture of cholesterol, vitamins, hormones and other pharmaceuticals.
